Origins & Symbolism

Laguz is water, lagu, and contains the same old root that surfaces in our own lake. To the Norse, water was the primordial substance. Before the world there was a yawning void, and into it ran the rime-rivers whose meltwater quickened into the substance of creation, and at the roots of the world-tree lay the deep wells where memory and fate were kept. Water was the element you could neither hold nor stop, that took every shape and wore down stone without seeming to try. The Old English rune poem feels its terror exactly: "the sea seems interminable to men, if they venture on the rolling vessel, and the waves of the sea terrify them, and the sea-steed heeds not its bridle." There is the heart of it: a force larger than the one who rides it, moving by its own deep currents and answering to no rein. Laguz is that deep: the current running beneath the surface, the pull you feel and follow before you could say where it is taking you.

The Marketing Lens

Laguz is the rune of hidden current: the angle that speaks to what a customer wants beneath the reason they would give you for wanting it. There is an old axiom in sales, "people buy on emotion and justify with logic." Laguz is that emotional current, running underneath, the real driver the customer feels long before the logical reasons arrive to explain it. The most powerful Laguz copy does not argue with the logical reasons. It reaches past them and names the true want, the one the customer recognizes the instant they read it, the way you recognize a feeling you have carried for years but never put into words.

This is the current beneath the decision, not the things it is so easily mistaken for. It is not the warm, conscious gladness of a good moment (Wunjo, the feeling the customer knows they are having); and it is not the recognition of finding your people (Mannaz, the visible "we"). It is the deeper pull, the one already moving before reason arrives to explain it, the want the customer cannot quite name until you name it for them. Find that, and you are no longer selling a product. You are answering a desire the customer never said aloud.

Brainstorming Prompts

On the surface, what is your customer buying? Underneath, what are they really paying for, the status, the reassurance, the relief?
What does your product let your customer feel about themselves that they would never say out loud?
Beneath the practical reason for the purchase, what is the unspoken desire it fulfills?
What feeling is already moving in your customer before they reason about your product, and how do you speak straight to it?
What can you tell your customer that they feel is true before they can explain why?

Brand in the Wild

L'Oréal's "Because You're Worth It" (1973) names the want out loud and still leaves it underneath. On its face the line is about the product being worth the slightly higher price. Underneath, it is about you being worth it, and that is the reason that actually sells. The stated purchase is hair color. The real purchase is permission, a small daily act of self-worth dressed as a shopping decision. Fifty years on the line still runs, because the want it speaks to never goes quiet: the wish to believe we deserve the good thing.

lululemon's "This Is Yoga" (2017, the brand's first global campaign) sells almost nothing about the clothes. It moves through bodies and breath and sweat, through people who look nothing like the magazine version of a yogi, and it sells a way of being in your own skin. The mat and the leggings are incidental. What the customer is reaching for is the person they become when they wear them: steadier, quieter, at home in a body the rest of the day makes them doubt. The stated purchase is athletic apparel. The real purchase is an identity, and the feeling of already living inside it.

Angle in Action

A business-writing course does not lead with grammar, templates, or modules. It leads with a want the customer has never put on a wish list: "You know what you mean. You are just tired of watching people skim your emails and miss the point, tired of sounding junior in writing when you are anything but." The stated purchase is clearer writing. The real purchase is to be taken seriously. Laguz names the want beneath the want, and the product becomes the answer to a desire the customer had never said aloud.

Pairs Well With

ᚨAnsuz: pair Laguz with Ansuz for the want and the words, where Laguz finds the desire running beneath the surface and Ansuz says it out loud in a voice the customer trusts: sense what they cannot articulate, then articulate it for them, and the message lands like something they already believed.ᚲKenaz: pair Laguz with Kenaz for the current and the clarity, where Laguz names the want the customer feels but cannot see and Kenaz brings it into the light: first the recognition, then the understanding, the feeling made knowledge.

Don't confuse ᛚ Laguz with ᛗ Mannaz · Shared Belonging (the visible "we" on the surface, not the want hidden beneath it) or ᚹ Wunjo · Simple Joy (the feeling the customer knows they are having, not the current they cannot name).
