Origins & Symbolism

Týr, the old sky-god of justice and the sworn oath, the one the Norse turned to when a thing had to be done right. His myth is the whole rune in a single act. The gods needed to bind Fenrir, the wolf fated to devour the world, but the wolf would let himself be chained only if one of them placed a hand in his jaws as a pledge of good faith. They all refused, knowing the fetter (Gleipnir) was a trick and the hand was forfeit. All but Týr. He laid his sword-hand between the wolf's teeth, the binding held, and when Fenrir understood he had been deceived, he bit the hand off at the wrist. Týr had known he would. That is Tiwaz: not the power you wield but the power you are willing to give up, knowingly and in the open, so that the thing you value can stand. The Old English rune poem keeps the same faith in a quieter key, naming Tir a guiding star that keeps faith well, holding its course over the mists of night and never failing.

The Marketing Lens

Tiwaz is the rune of sacrificial proof: a value made credible by what you were willing to lose for it. In a market where every brand claims to stand for something, the claim is worth nothing until it costs something. Tiwaz is the receipt. It does not say the brand believes in a thing; it shows the price the brand paid to keep believing it, in the open, where the customer can see the wound. That public, willing loss buys a loyalty no slogan can.

The vector is the whole of it, and it points inward. Tiwaz is not the enemy you call out and strike (Thurisaz, the blow aimed outward), and it is not the value you simply announce (Ansuz, said but not yet paid for) — a promise to sacrifice stays talk until the cost is actually borne, and only then becomes Tiwaz. Nor is it a gift given to get something back (Gebo, which opens a debt); the sacrifice expects nothing in return, because the loss itself is the message. The move is simple and hard: take the expensive path on purpose, then let the customer see exactly what it cost.

Brand in the Wild

REI's #OptOutside is the cleanest sacrifice in modern advertising. In 2015 the outdoor co-op closed all 143 of its stores on Black Friday, the single most profitable retail day of the year, and paid its roughly 12,000 employees to spend the day outside instead. It made the move permanent in 2022. The detail that makes it Tiwaz and not a stunt: REI never claimed it boosted sales. The cost was simply the point, the value lived out loud at the company's own expense, and 1.4 million people joined in the first year because the loss was real.

CVS paid an even steeper price. In 2014 the pharmacy chain stopped selling tobacco in all of its stores, walking away from an estimated two billion dollars in revenue a year, roughly a billion and a half in cigarettes and another half-billion in the things people buy alongside them. A company that calls itself a health business decided it could not also be a cigarette business, and let the gap in the ledger make the argument.

Angle in Action

A supplement brand with nothing to hide leads with the cost of its honesty: "We could use the cheap fillers every other brand uses, and our margins would be better for it. We decided not to. Here is exactly what is in this bottle, and exactly what we gave up to keep it that way." The lower margin, named out loud, is what turns a product into a conviction. The customer does not have to trust the claim, because they can see what it cost to make it true.

Pairs Well With

ᚨAnsuz: pair Tiwaz with Ansuz for say-it then pay-it, where Ansuz declares the value in words and Tiwaz proves the brand means it by what the value cost: declaration alone is cheap, declaration plus a visible price is a conviction the customer believes.ᚦThurisaz: pair Tiwaz with Thurisaz for the same fight from both cameras, where Thurisaz names what the brand is against and strikes it and Tiwaz shows what the fight cost the brand to wage: the enemy named outward and the price paid inward.
